Did "Son of Hamas" Mosab Hassan Yousef dupe the Evangelical Christian community and counter-jihad movement?
Few have missed the online cluster that has ensued between well-known "ex-terrorist" Walid Shoebat and Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of jailed Hamas terrorist leader Sheikh Hassan Yousef. Both are high-profile converts to Christianity, live in the United States, and well-known as speakers in Evangelical Christian forums. I have heard them both speak.
The tumult ensued when Shoebat, writing at PajamasMedia.com, citing largely circumstantial evidence (old video interviews), basically accused the young believer Yousef of being a fraud and "double agent." The requisite sinister picture of Yousef accompanying the article rounded out the solemn tone of Shoebat's article.
The subsequent response to this has been predictably intense, reverberating throughout the Internet, from America to Israel. Most has been, not surprisingly, "Ah, haa!" from many ready to cast the young Yousef to the dogs, these, already predisposed to this "clear" exposure of Shiite Muslim "Taqiyya and Kitman" being perpetrated upon the uneducated, gullible and naïve America Evangelical community. Knowing Shoebat's world view along with the rest of the anti-Jihad community, it was clear his personal "Taqiyya" bells had started ringing and he was going to expose Yousef, come what may.

Which brings us back to the Shoebat/Yousef scenario. I believe both are Christians, although Shoebat much more mature in his walk with the Lord. And he is wrong, especially for not taking the high ground.
Shoebat cites a few old videos of Yousef in his report, largely circumstantial. If circumstantial evidence is the bar, Shoebat may be practicing Taqiyya as well. Many have questioned his own testimony. Former Israeli Shin-Bet agent (and handler of Yousef during his Shin-Bet period), Gonen ben Itzhak states, "...Walid Shoebat, claims to have been a PLO terrorist who bombed Bank Leumi in Bethlehem. Yet, I never heard his name before, never saw his name in any Israeli intelligence files, and there is no record of any such attack." [Rebuttals to this are duly noted.]
Shoebat responds to Yousef, "Now, your Shen Bet handler has stated I was a fraud, that he checked my records and found nothing. How could he have done this in the last few days, especially when he no longer is a Shen-Bet operative?"
Who do we believe? The former "terrorist" with the spotty story or the veteran Israeli Shin-Bet agent who, as most who know the counter-terrorism community, never really "retire" but continue to maintain their friendships and connections within their field? Most would believe the intelligence agent—who knows exactly what they are talking about, and avoid being duped by Arab Taqiyya. Pastor Mike Rodriguez of Calvary Chapel, Corona, among others, is thus a dupe to let Shoebat speak there.
Brigette Gabrielle, Lebanese founder of "ACT! For America" claims to be a Christian, yet her chapter leaders are directed to suppress any reference or benign practice such as opening their meetings with Christian prayer, ostensibly to avoid "offending" any of other belief. Yet any Christian, who is not one in culture or name only, knows instinctively the Gospel proclaimed is the only answer to the encroachment of Shariah law and Islam in a culture.
Plowing the ground of arbitrary "human rights" and secular, morally relativistic, Post-modernist inclusion and "tolerance" mantra only continues to prepare the cultural soil for the unrelenting spread of Islam, bringing Lebanon Redux to America. Islam is peculiarly well-adapted to thrive in this type of environment. This circumstantial evidence modeled by Gabrielle, this Biblically illogical world view, and the threat of Arab Taqiyya, can only lead one to believe she is being somehow deceitful. Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel, Chino Hills, is thus a dupe for having her speak there.
Pastor Greg Laurie, of Harvest Christian Fellowship, Riverside, in a surprise interview at the 2010 Preach the Word Prophecy Conference talked to Mosab Hassan Yousef at length. Joel Rosenberg chronicled on his blog a private dinner he had with Yousef at his home, and endorsed his nascent ministry. I suppose these Holy Spirit directed, high-profile and respected leaders in the global Evangelical Christian world are fooled as well, duped by this slick double agent from Gaza as he is "...touring churches to end Israel's lifeline."
Give me a break. That proposition is absolutely absurd. The God of Israel is their lifeline; American and global Evangelical support of Israel an unchangeable expression of that truth. Furthermore, Progressive liberalism and a pernicious Replacement Theology in our churches is doing much more to damage relations with the Jewish nation.
Which brings me to the point of this article. I have not even mentioned the numerous videos and online media sources of Yousef speaking aggressively against Islam, let alone his personal testimony. Judging Arab Christian brethren in the Lord by the criteria framed in secular anti-terrorism constructs and the Muslim concept of "Taqiyya and Kitman" only leads to one result, attacks based in individual personal opinion and a biased and suspicious minded world view. If every Arab is put under suspicion, then no Arab, professing Christian or otherwise, can ever really be trusted.
Geez, I wonder who is ultimately the author of that?!
It is playing by the enemy's rules! Satan himself is portrayed as the accuser of our brethren. [Revelation 12:10] So what happens? These two Arabic speaking brothers, special infantry the Holy Spirit needs right now to reach the Arab world, are detoured in a pointless personal rhetorical contest that will go no where. The damage by this incident will have far reaching implications, both now and in eternity, and the Muslim/Persian world, swept up in the winds of a delusional Islamist revival (now, with the tacit endorsement of Barack Obama), are still sailing daily to destruction on the rocky shoals of an immovable Jewish reality the God of Israel—Yahweh—has stated clearly will not ever be moved again. And no one is warning them! [Ezekiel 3:18-19]
Yes, we are to be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves" dealing with people. [Matthew 10:16] But ultimately our decisions about people, after an objective judgment filtered through the prism of Biblical truth, are directed by the Holy Spirit as we listen to Him and His direction. [Matthew 2:12, Acts 10:22, Acts 21:4]
"For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rear-guard." [Isaiah 52:12]
Rather, "...let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart." [Zechariah 7:10] I Corinthians chapter 13 should be a Spirit-filled Christian's moderator, and not the hyper-suspicion of Shiite Islam's doctrine of "Taqiyya and Kitman" as its distrust and suspicion leaves ruin in its logical conclusion.
The Holy Spirit is engaged at this moment in an unprecedented outreach with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Islamic world through men like Dr. Hormoz Shariat with "Iran Alive Ministries." Mosab Hassan Yousef is yet another figure in a very sparse field reaching out to the Muslim world; his book in Arabic posted on his site another powerful tool to perhaps convince Muslims to stop for a moment and consider another way—the exclusive claims of Jesus Christ and life! [John 14:6].
If those Arabic/Farsi/Pashtun speaking Christian believers who continually travel around blathering on about how the West doesn't understand Arab culture and magnifying the very worst of the Middle Eastern world instead utilized their vast knowledge of Arab culture none of us dumb, naïve Western Christians supposedly don't have focused on lifting up Jesus as Savior and Lord and sought to graciously evangelize the Islamic world, we might see the encroachment of Shariah law and Islam stopped in its tracks—and people saved.
But then, that's what the Spirit-filled Christian Church should have always been doing.
This attack on Yousef's integrity and credibility is inexcusable. I am praying for him, that he overcome this latest personal trial. He is a young Christian, with many years of personal struggle ahead as the Holy Spirit delivers him from the spiritual heavy baggage of the bitterness and scars of his past. Yet, he is in good care and company. Joel Rosenberg said it best, in conclusion:
"...And please keep praying for Mosab, that the Lord would continue protecting him and giving him such remarkable courage. Pray, too, that the Lord would take him still deeper in his study of God's Word and continue to train him and develop him as a bold evangelist and Christian leader among the Palestinian people."
